Description

It gives me great pleasure to introduce this publication about the Weka Pass Railway, especially since it has been created by one of our younger members who also holds a responsible management position in our organization.

We are fortunate to be able to operate a railway in such a historical and beautiful part of the North Canterbury landscape, and this guidebook introduces you to this area. While outlining the history of the railway, in both New Zealand Railways days, and in the time we have been running trains here, it also describes the countryside we travel through – from the flat plain of vineyards to the spectacular Weka Pass, Frog and Seal Rocks, and the vista seen from the station at Waikari.

It describes our stations, rolling stock, our workshop facilities, and our locomotives, but most important of all, it outlines the work our volunteers perform both behind the scenes, and in your view as we run our trains.

Heritage societies like ours depend totally on the efforts of volunteers, who take up their vital roles because they love and believe in what they do, and because it is important to preserve and display a long-gone part of this country’s heritage.
