Staircase is probably New Zealand’s most isolated railway station, located in the 42 mile long mountain section of the Midland Line between Springfield and Arthurs Pass. The name Staircase epitomises the nature of the terrain that the railway and the Waimakariri River has to deal with in this area, with most hills steeper than a 30 degrees slope.
The highest railway viaduct in the South Island is just ahead of the lusty Kb engine. The Staircase Viaduct stands 73 meters above the valley floor.
